The news likes to talk with Dan about all the problems with the bureaucratic permitting process, but he is quick to emphasize that building an accessory dwelling unit in Berkeley or Oakland has become far easier than it ever was before. So long as a homeowner has an experienced architect and contractor, getting a permit is simply a matter of patience. Once permitted, McDunn ADUs can complete a new backyard cottage in about 4-5 months, from demolition to move-in.
