Senator Skinner & Dan McDunn on California ADUs

State Senator Nancy Skinner spoke in the backyard of one of McDunn Constructions’s clients to address the potential of the ADU market alleviating the housing crisis in the Bay Area and across California. She is the author of California SB 1459, which would make it easier for homeowners to permit ADUs. Dan McDunn also shared a few thoughts about his experience of the market as a general contractor.

Here’s what Dan had to say about the roadblocks to ADUs in the state:

“The challenges we face here in Berkeley are not unique to Berkeley, but are demonstrative of what we’re dealing with at the state and local level to get housing constructed. This particular ADU, 392 square feet in a great neighborhood here in Berkeley, took over six months to permit. I have another client here that’s dealing with the same issue over on Mariposa. It took them almost 9 months to get to the permitting process, and another on Addison Street — 5 months, and we’re not permitted yet. These are for very small dwellings. I don’t understand what takes so long to get a permit issued for such small structures. And I think the bill being proposed is one that’s going to expedite the process for getting family members reunited and getting some small part of a solution to the housing crisis. So I’m really excited to see this move forward.”
